    1. A special thank you to Lake Union and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. David Johnson returns following the much loved popularTucker Series(highly recommend) with his latest, TOBY- a powerful story of a woman with a painful past who recovers with the help and love of a special dog. From mental illness, mystery, intrigue, music, and a complex past--makes for a heartwarming gritty Southern family saga.Symphony Nelson, a young woman who works as a CNA at the McKenzie Retirement [...]

    2. Layers and websWhat characters and life choices we encounter in this tale of Toby the orphaned pup and the people he loves and protects. As good a friend as one could want, his is the ultimate loyalty.

    3. Heartwarming This book is the story of Symphony Nelson and her best friend Toby, the puppy she rescued when he was just a few weeks old. More than that, however, it's the story of unconditional love. Toby shows Symphony that even though he has been hurt at times by both her and her mentally ill mother, he would still protect both of them to his death. Regardless of the mistakes they have made, he teaches them about forgiveness. When Symphony meets Caleb Showalter and reunites with a high school [...]

    4. A whole set of wonderful charactersThis love story never strayed from its essence as a love story. It is clear the main character is a magical dog named Toby but many of the ancillary people in this book have their own stories to tell and I hope to see them written up. Kevin, Caleb and Carol all deserve their own space and I feel they should be fleshed out. I hope our author brings further flesh to their bones. However, Symphony alone is a most compelling vehicle for a great love story that is n [...]

    5. AmazingToby is a book about a dog but not a typical dog book. Toby leads you thru an amazing story that will touch each person in a different way because it is a story about all of us in one way or another. This is a must read for people of all ages, just be ready to stay up late reading and thinking about Toby when not reading it. Read the Tucker series also from first to last. You will be blessed.

    6. A little disappointedThis is the only novel by David that I've given less than 5 stars. I got a little bored about halfway through and almost quit reading it but continued on anyway to see if it might lead to something a little more exciting. It did have one surprise at the ending but that was about it. Loved Toby though. Exactly how I feel about my dogs.

    7. Addiction Secrets Dedication Dog's Unconditional LoveWell written story of family dynamics enhanced by dog's interventions and his point of view Family dysfunction includes drug use psychological problems guilt Message that we all make mistakes but deserve to give ourselves the benefit of the doubt and forgiveness we give others Will look for next book

    8. Poignant and riveting This is probably one of the best books I've ever read, in all honesty. It was riveting! I couldn't stop reading. I learned some valuable life lessons from this extraordinary book. I hope to read more from this very gifted author. God bless him.

    9. Wonderful Story. This deserves even more than a 5. Such a different twist on a story, like reading a dog's mind. I will definitely recommend it to my daughter whose best friend is her Maltese.

    10. TOBYDavid is a fantastic writer. His characters have depth and he brings them to life. This is the fifth book I have read. I will continue he to read his stories . This story of a woman, her friend dog TOBY and the people who teach about love, life and loving yourself.

    11. This was a good reads winnerI liked this book. It had a good storyline with a few twists and turns and a little romance. I would recommend it as a good read.

    12. Weekend readI enjoyed the book. It was short but a good book to read when the weekend is a stay in and read a good book.

    13. GreatDavid Johnson's books are great. Love his writing style. His books would make a great TV series. Especially his Tucker series.

    14. Great readWonderful book. Exciting and a real page turner! David tells a story about flawed people in the world and how God can and will save them and never leave them alone.

    15. Best book ever! This book tugs at your heart strings. Love is the main character in this book. I couldn't put it down!!

    16. I liked this book, because for some reason it felt more real than most books I usually read. It has a few things that make you think 'who can be that stupid?' And a few things that look like something out of a spy movie, but overall it is a very good reading. Also, reading from the point of view of Toby, the dog, very cool. (view spoiler)[Many, many spoilers, you have been warned. So, basically, it's the story about Symphony and her dog Toby, but also about people around her. She works in a nurs [...]

    17. This book is beautiful. It shows the bond that Symphony has with her dog Toby. It is an amazing friendship that nothing can tear apart.Symphony had a rough childhood until she found Toby. Toby helped make things better and they truly needed each other to survive. Things weren't easy for either of them growing up but they had each other and that was what mattered most. She makes some not so great choices in her life early on that aren't so great. You read all about her personal struggles as well a [...]

    18. Toby by David Johnson tells the story of Symphony Nelson and her dog, Toby. Symphony is a CNA for a nursing home with patients who can be difficult. Her mother has a dissociative disorder and Symphony never really knows what she is going to find when she gets home. Toby and Symphony found each other in the woods when they were young. Toby is her support when things are hard. She has found support in various places, but for her life seems to be monotone with nothing ever changing. Then something [...]

    19. I'm a sucker for stories with dogsThis book I won from for an unbiased review. I enjoyed the stories POV of Symphony Nelson and the POV of Toby, her dog she found as a puppy. I really enjoyed the story unfolding and the introduction of Carol, Symphony's mom and the condition she has that impacts not only Symphony but Toby as well. As the story builds, adds characters granddaddy Virgil, Calab, Mrs. Showater, Roger, Beverly and Kevins and then, the end falls flat crescendo ( come on I had to say [...]

    20. Oh this book is so much more than a story of a girl and the dog she found. It's a story with wonderful characters not your normal everyday people, but one with mental illness, one with Alzheimer's and a few still surfering from their years at war and some just down right mean. And there are family secrets gelore, and friendships that sometimes don't really seem like friendships . I gave this book the five stars cause it held my interest the whole way,it shocked and surprised me and keep me turning [...]

    21. ImagineThe Mill River Recluse with a loyal-to-a-fault dog at the center of the story. This has a similar theme - the redemptive power of friendship - with enough suspense to keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. It has some light references to faith but not to the point that I'd consider it to be Christian fiction. I received this book for free through Giveaways.

    22. Absolutely hands-down, one of the BEST series I have read!Absolutely hands-down, one of the BEST series I have ever had the pleasure of reading!! This whole series is absolutely amazing! I see some people have left some negative comments and I have to ask what were you reading? This was entertaining, this was sad, this was beautiful, it had a little bit of everything. Absolutely loved the series I wish there was more, I just feel like I need to know more about what happens in their life. One ver [...]

    23. Toby is a wonderful book about friends, family and the love they share. I was impressed by the range of emotions this book brought out in me. Starting at the beginning when Symphony finds Toby, who was freezing and starving, while she is walking in the woods. They immediately become the best of friends. They shared years of pain, longing, confusion, happiness etc. I definitely recommend this book. I received this book from .

    24. DreadfulRubbish.I read and loved the first novel in the Tucker series.I really shouldn't have bothered with any more. The heroine treats her patients with condescension, eg,"Shall we have a shower ?" Her dog is hit or cuddled by her depending on mood walked once a week and generally cared for by mentally ill ,violent adults. The sorry tale is tied up by love.

    25. Wonderful! Loved TobyThis was an amazing book. I really enjoyed it! As an avid dog lover, this might have influenced my opinion a little. Seeing the world from a dog's perspective and knowing there really are astonishingly smart dogs made this book a "will read again"!

    26. Great novel, was fascinating to see how war affects lives, we really do not realize these things.Symphony was typical of a girl in her situation. There were surprises throughout the book. Thanks for Toby's loyalty and understanding of his Symphony.

    27. It was not the kind of book I usually read, although I LOVE dogs! I expected it to be different, but, to me it was just OKAY.

    28. What a moving storyThis would be one of the best stories I have read of late. The suspense and storyline really captivates and was really thought provoking
