    1. Mr. Pip (the monkey) and Frederick Lipton (the actor) are best friends. But when Frederick gets so busy with birthday festivities that Mr. Pip's present gets overlooked, Mr. Pip goes into a funk. So Frederick, unaware of the reason, takes Mr. Pip to the Genius Guild to solve the problem. But they only understand academics not matters of the heart.

    2. Just when you think that you need to do something clever and exceptional to be impressive, here comes the reminder in Dan Santat’s The Guild of Geniuses that often it is the simple and unassuming things that speak to a relationship more effectively. “You don’t have to be a genius to be a good friend” (publisher copy). Sure it is fun to think about all these grandiose gestures or inventions or adventures, but anyone who knows my friend Juanita Martus, or has met Mr. Pip in The Guild of Ge [...]

    3. Mr. Pip is the monkey companion of Frederick, who is a very busy and popular film star. After being ignored on Frederick's birthday, when the star receives lots of gifts and attention, Mr. Pip looks miserable. Being the good owner that he is, Frederick takes Mr. Pip to several doctors, but none can find anything wrong. Desperate for his friend to be happy, Frederick consults the Guild of Geniuses, who have invented all sorts of fun and quirky mechanical inventions. Mr. Pip stays with the guild w [...]

    4. Acrylic and mixed media illustrations fill the pages of this book that may appeal to young readers. But my senses felt assaulted by all the shapes and colors in several scenes that just seemed to have too much going on. While the book has a comic book feel to it, with some smaller scenes and some larger ones, I just felt overwhelmed by it all. Maybe my lack of connection with the storyline was part of the problem. A monkey named Mr. Pip becomes depressed when his best friend, Frederick Lipton, s [...]

    5. This new edition of The Guild of Geniuses brings Santat’s first picture book back into print. Santat has since refined his illustration style, but this early work still features blocky characters, muted colors, and his signature quirkiness. The tale is entertaining but may be a bit too strange for some readers. Still, fans of Santat and children in 2nd and 3rd grades especially will want to spend time with this story of an endearing monkey, Mr. Pip.

    6. Mr Pip is Fredrick Lipton's best friend. Mr Pip is a monkey. Fredrick Lipton is a famous actor. When Fredrick's birthday comes around Mr Pip gets up early to get his present ready, but then he realizes his friend has all sorts of fabulous presents from lots of famous people. Would he even want Mr Pip's gift? Fredrick realizes Mr Pip is down, so he takes him to all the vets in town and when they can't provide an answer to his despondency, he leaves him with the Guild of Geniuses to figure out wha [...]

    7. This is a lively story of friendship, and of feeling inadequate when a friend seems to have so much more than you can give. The summary suggests Mr. Pip (devoted friend to Frederick) is feeling neglected, and yet Frederick notices Mr. Pip's low mood and attempts everything, including the helpful intervention of the Guild of Geniuses, to help him recover. As in all good picture books, it is the child, (or monkey, in this case) who finds a way to solve his own problem and restore harmony to their [...]

    8. Dan Santat’s always spectacular illustrations and over the top characters makes reading fun for kids of all ages. The Guild of Geniuses is a story of friendship between a popular celebrity (Fred) and his devoted monkey (Mr. Pip). When Mr. Pip becomes depressed Fred does what so many parents do when they see their child is distraught – seeks answers from anyone and everyone. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Mr. Pip (and probably most kids) just needs some more attention and love. [...]

    9. An actor is best friends with a monkey. When the actor's birthday rolls around, the monkey tries to give his best friend a gift, but it's hard because of all the other attention and gifts the actor receives. This makes the monkey sad, and instead of trying to figure out why his best friend is sad, the actor enlists the Guild of Geniuses to figure out the problem. They, however, can't seem to find the answer. Just goes to show how a little communication between friends can solve a whole lot of co [...]

    10. *I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through my district library services*So, I thought this book was fun, if a little confusing. I'm not sure why, in the course of visiting every vet in town, Mr. Pip couldn't just tell Frederick why he was sad. I guess he just had to build up his courage? However, the illustrations are really interesting and kids will enjoy poring over this book.

    11. A cute picture book with engaging illustrations with the message that spending time with your friends and loved ones is better than anything else. This book would be most appropriate for young children ages 5 to 8.

    12. Rating and review by my nine-year-old son: "That was perfect. I'm going to keep this for a while, and I definitely want my own copy."We had checked it out from the library. Off to add it to his wishlist at now.

    13. I really enjoyed this book, mainly because the art was wonderful, the main characters were intriguing and it was different.

    14. This book was okay. The illustrations were beautiful, as expected. However, it just didn't pack that fun and exciting punch I was waiting for.
